Safety Tips for Long Trips
Any parent knows how easy it is to become distracted when driving around with kids. Taking a long road trip in a car can add tension and fatigue for the driver as well as the passengers. Here are a few pointers to keep you and your family safe when you are on the road.
Be sure everyone is properly buckled up. When you have kids in the back seat, you will want to be sure they stay buckled in while you’re driving. Seat belts keep passengers and drivers safe in the event of an accident. They have saved many lives and minimize injuries. Wearing seat belts will also prevent you from getting a traffic citation as it is the law in most states to wear them.
Take advantage of rest stops. Driving for long distances can be tiring on passengers and especially the driver. Make frequent stops to eat, refuel, and use the bathroom. Taking breaks will help everyone to get some fresh air, a little exercise, and reenergize.
Keep passengers occupied with quiet activities. When you’re taking a long trip, having kids yelling and playing with loud toys can be very distracting. Such distractions can increase your chances of getting in an accident and raise your insurance rates. Bring plenty of drinks, snacks and quiet activities such as coloring books to keep kids entertained. This will help you to maintain your sanity, if only for a little while.
Have small pillows and light blankets on board to allow for naps. Encouraging your kids to take naps during the trip will make it go by faster for them and gives you peace and quiet. Having your driving partner take naps will help them to be well rested for their turn to drive. It’s important to be well rested when you’re on the road, because driving while fatigued can increase your risk of getting in a wreck.
Taking road trips can be fun for the whole family. Just be sure to make necessary preparations to keep everyone happy and safe on the road. The last thing you want when you’re traveling is to get in an accident.
If you are driving out of the country, check with your car insurance to make sure it covers your trip there.
