How to Stay Away from Insurance Company Scams

Everywhere you turn these days people are trying to scam you for your money. Car insurance is no exception. There are ‘so-called companies’ that will try to convince you they have the cheapest insurance available anywhere. The problem with these supposed auto insurance agencies is that once you sign up for the policy they increase your rate up to $200 due to ‘company rate error.’ These companies are performing the old “bait and switch routine,” where they draw you in with low rates but then switch them on you for higher ones. They pocket the money and don’t intend on paying out claims. Here’s how you can avoid this from happening to you when shopping around for car insurance.

Do Due Diligence

Your best bet is to stick to more well-known insurance companies. Your chances of getting scammed are higher with small, unheard of companies. However, not all small insurance agencies are bad. Likewise, not all big insurance companies provide the best protection. There are ways you can look into an agency to find out if it’s trustworthy or not.

Check reviews for a particular insurance company you are interested in. This can give you an idea of what type of company it is by other clients’ experience with them. You can do this simply by doing a search for complaints on the company or check with your state’s department of insurance.

Find out what the financial strength of an auto insurance company is before committing to them. If you find an agency you like with great rates, what good does it do you if they are unable to payout a claim? The A.M. Best ratings provide rates of the financial strength for all insurance companies. Once more, you will likely not have to worry about this with bigger insurance carriers.

Car insurance is an important part of ensuring protection for your vehicle in the event of an accident. You want to have a reliable insurance company that isn’t going to low ball you. Be sure to do your homework when shopping around for car insurance. This not only allows you to find better rates for insurance, but will help you to find trustworthy companies you can feel great about.
