5 Ways to Avoid Getting in an Accident

Nobody wants to get in an accident. Your car insurance goes up, your vehicle may have to put in the shop and you could be missing work if you’re injured. The best thing to do is to know what precautions to take. We have provided a few tips to keep you safe on the roads and prevent accidents.

1. Only Drive When it’s Necessary – it’s no secret that the less you drive, the less chance you have of getting in an accident. Typically the worst times to drive are early in the morning and late afternoon when everyone is going and coming from work. You are probably familiar with the dreaded five o’clock traffic. Driving at night, especially on the weekends increases your risks as there is typically more traffic.

2. Limit Distractions – it’s so easy to get distracted behind the wheel. When you don’t have your full attention on the road, you leave yourself vulnerable to a collision. Keep your radio at a reasonable volume, don’t answer your cell or text, and limit talking to other passengers while driving.

3. Don’t eat and drive – You know you should never drink and drive, but you probably don’t think twice about eating. Unless you have telepathy, you need at least one hand to eat, which means one hand on the wheel. Some drivers even use their knees. The safest way to drive is while using both hands.

4. Don’t drive if you’re ill or tired – If you aren’t feeling well or you’re very tired, it’s not a good idea to get on the road. Have someone else drive if you absolutely need to get somewhere.

5. Drive in a good mood – Don’t drive if you are angry or try to leave your frustrations behind you when you get behind the wheel. When you drive in a bad mood you are more prone to road rage and you risk getting in a collision.

There are numerous ways you can avoid getting in accident. Take safety precautions when you are driving and obey the law. Fewer accidents keep the roads safe and your car insurance rates down
