What are State Minimum Coverage Requirements for Car Insurance?

0

Each state in the U.S. has a minimum liability coverage requirement for your car insurance policy. This is the bare minimum each state believes is enough to cover any expenses you may incur if you are involved in a car accident.

Keep in mind, these are just minimums. You can and probably should purchase more to ensure that any car repair or medical expenses you may be responsible for are fully covered by your car insurance policy. If your liability coverage is not sufficient, you will be required to pay the difference between what your insurance will pay for and the actual costs out of your own pocket.

You can get detailed information on each state’s requirements on our “By State” link at the top of this page, but here is a summary of what each state requires.

Below is a list of each state and its requirements. The numbers signify:

Bodily injury liability per person/bodily injury liability per accident/property damage

So that 50/100/25 signifies that the state has a minimum required coverage of $50,000 per person for bodily injury and $100,000 per accident, as well as $25,000 for property damage.
