Personal Injury Protection Coverage

Also called PIP, personal injury protection coverage pays for medical expenses for you and any passengers, regardless of who is at fault in an accident. It is not available in all states. Personal injury protection coverage also pays for expenses in the event of death from a car accident. Here is who is covered by PIP:

  • You, the policyholder
  • Others covered on your insurance policy
  • Other passengers in your car
  • Other drivers
  • You as the policyholder and family members if you are injured while riding in someone else’s vehicle

Your state may have a limit on how much personal injury protection coverage you can purchase. Check to see what that limit is before buying your policy. If you do not have health care coverage, a PIP policy will ensure you get your medical expenses covered in the event of an accident.

Some states offer other variations on personal injury protection coverage, such as:

  • Additional personal injury protection coverage
  • Guest Personal Injury Protection
  • Full PIP health primary
  • Medical only health primary
  • Medical only PIP primary

Check to see if your state is a no-fault state and allows you to purchase personal injury protection coverage.
