Liability Coverage

Liability coverage refers to the portion of your car insurance policy that pays for damages or injuries to other drivers and passengers who are hurt when you are found at fault in a car accident. Liability coverage includes two primary components:

The amount of liability coverage you purchase for your insurance policy will pay for repairs to other cars and personal property as well as medical expenses, not to exceed the amount of the coverage you purchase. Liability coverage also pays for legal fees, and will protect you should you be sued as a result of causing the auto collision.

Liability coverage is required in every state. The minimum requirements for coverage vary per state. See our state page to see how much liability coverage you are required to carry in your state. Amounts for liability coverage can range from low amounts like $10,000 to $100,000 or more. Your insurance company will not pay more than the selected amount of coverage for medical expenses, repairs or legal fees. If damages exceed your coverage you will be responsible for paying for the overage out of pocket.
