First Party Benefits
Similar to what personal injury protection coverage pays for, first party benefits pays for medical expenses for you or members of your household, as well as other passengers in your car, if you are injured in a car accident.
Pennsylvania is currently the only state that requires drivers to purchase first party benefits coverage. This coverage can also pay for funeral expenses, lost wages and accidental death related to a car collision.
Often first party benefits include a package of coverage, including:
- First Party Benefits – Accidental Death
- First Party Benefits – Combination Package
- First Party Benefits – Extraordinary Medical
- First Party Benefits – Funeral
- First Party Benefits – Income Loss
Whatever amount you choose for your first party benefits is the maximum you can receive toward medical expenses. For example, if you purchase $5000 in coverage, your car insurance company will pay for your medical expenses up to $5000. Beyond that, either you will have to pay out of pocket or your health insurance will pay for.
If you do not have medical insurance or you have a high deductible for it, consider purchasing first party benefits coverage.
