Women Driver

Men, you may be dismayed to find out that on average, women pay less for car insurance than you do. That’s not to say all women are better drivers than men, but the stereotype that women can’t drive needs to be dispelled. Read on to find out why women pay less in a car insurance comparison.

Who Are the Worst Drivers?

While it can’t be applied as a blanket statement, men are worse drivers than women. They tend to be reckless and not as good at defensively driving. There are several reasons for this:

  • Men tend to drive more aggressively.
  • Men are more likely to get into car accidents.
  • Men tailgate and switch lanes more frequently than women.
  • Men tend to drive faster.

All of these factors lead up to one statistical fact: men are higher risks as drivers. Because car insurance companies are looking to lower the chance that their policyholders will be involved in a collision, they hedge their bets against men by charging more for their premiums. Women, on the other hand, get into fewer accidents, so insurance companies feel comfortable charging them lower rates on their car insurance policies.

The Exceptions

As we said, we can’t make the blanket statement that all women are better drivers than men. Nor can we say that car insurance will always be cheaper for women. Car insurance premiums are based on coverage as well as driving history, so if you have a woman with a history riddled with car accidents and traffic violations, chances are her car insurance will be higher than a comparable coverage for a male who has a pristine driving record.

Likewise, if a woman carries more coverage or options on her policy, it will cost more than a barebones policy carried by a male. There are, as you can see, exceptions to every rule.

What Men Can Do About It

Men, we know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking What can I do to even things up? I want to pay less for car insurance!

a. Good driver discounts
b. Anti-theft device discounts
c. Seatbelt discounts
d. Being a member of a group that gets insurance discounts
e. Military or federal employee discounts
3. Be a Good Driver. The best way to prove to your car insurance company that you are a good driver is to be one. Most insurance companies require you to have at least 5 years without an accident on your record and 3 years without a traffic violation to get a good driver discount. Slow down and stay safe while driving.
