Buying Cheap Automobile Insurance for The Most Stolen Vehicles of All Times

If you’re thinking about buying a new or used car, you’d do well to first review this list of the cars that are most commonly stolen, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s Hot Wheels 2009 Report. If you own one of the cars on this list, you may not be able to get quite as cheap automobile insurance as you would if you owned a car that wasn’t on this list.

Are you insuring a car that is likely to be stolen?

Before we get to the list, here’s some good news: auto theft is on a decline. Between 2007 and 2008, the number of cars stolen went down 13%, and that was the 5th consecutive year of auto theft decline in the U.S. So while the chance that your car will be stolen is lower than it used to be, it’s still important to take precautions to prevent your car from being a target by auto thieves.

What You Can Do to Prevent Theft

No matter what cheap automobile insurance policy you buy, you are likely covered against vehicle theft. Still, who wants to go through the hassle of having their car stolen, reporting it, missing the personal items you left inside and then having to buy a new car to replace your beloved car? No one, of course.

Take these measures to prevent your car from theft.

  • Lock your car. Seems simple, yet many people don’t bother.
  • Don’t leave your keys where they could be picked up. This includes in a public place and even your home if you have guests you don’t know well.
  • Install an anti theft device in your car.
  • Install an immobilizing device, such as “Kill” switches, fuel cut-offs and smart keys.
  • Park in well-lit areas
  • Don’t leave your car in a public parking lot overnight if you can help it.

Now for the List

Now for what you’ve been waiting for: The List! You may be surprised that not all the cars on this list are new. Sometimes it’s older models that appeal the most to thieves, and with ever-improving anti-theft devices on newer cars, they’re getting harder to steal:

1. 1994 Honda Accord
2. 1995 Honda Civic
3. 1989 Toyota Camry
4. 1997 Ford F-150 Pickup
5. 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup
6. 2000 Dodge Caravan
7. 1996 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee
8. 1994 Acura Integra
9. 1999 Ford Taurus
10. 2002 Ford Explorer

Why Car Thieves Steal

You may be wondering why thieves steal these particular models. Certain cars have high value for their parts, so thieves steal them to resell the parts on the black market. They can get about twice what they’re worth in the car if they sell the parts individually.

How this List Impacts Your Cheap Automobile Insurance Rate

If you already own a car that’s on this list, or if you have your heart set on buying one, how does this affect you? It may or it may not. You may pay a little bit more for your cheap automobile insurance policy, but probably not by much. Car insurance companies look at the likelihood that a particular year, make and model vehicle may be stolen and factor that in when building your car insurance quote.

The best thing you can do is shop around for insurance quotes (start right here on our site to make it easy for you to get multiple cheap automobile insurance quotes) and find a company that will not overcharge you for insuring one of the most likely to be stolen vehicles. Make sure to follow the precaution list above to reduce the risk of your car being stolen and be safe!
